Thailand, Cambodia agree to ‘immediate, unconditional’ ceasefire – Malaysia PM confirms

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to stop fighting immediately along their shared border. Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, made this announcement on Monday.

Anwar hosted important talks in Malaysia’s capital, Putrajaya. He also leads the ASEAN group of Southeast Asian countries. He said both countries reached an agreement to work together and bring peace back to the region.

The ceasefire will begin at midnight on July 28, according to a joint statement signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Anwar read the statement during the press conference.

At the end of the press event, the two leaders stood beside Anwar and shook hands. This showed they were serious about keeping to the agreement.

Tensions rose last Thursday when a landmine exploded near the border. The blast injured five Thai soldiers.

Since then, both Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of causing the violence. Reports say that at least 35 people have died, and more than 260,000 people on both sides have been forced to leave their homes.

Both Hun Manet and Phumtham praised the outcome of the meeting. They said they hope the ceasefire will lead to long-term peace and better talks between the two nations.
