Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has given a strong hint that he might run for president again in 2027. Atiku, who is now a major player in the opposition coalition linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made it clear that he plans to take serious action against corruption if elected.
While speaking in Hausa to a group of supporters, Atiku warned that anyone caught stealing public funds or engaging in corrupt practices would face tough punishment under his leadership. He didn’t mince words, saying in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), “I swear to God, if elected, whoever steals or engages in corruption, we will declare war against them and they must be punished.”
Atiku ran for president in 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost. Now, it seems he is aligning with a new opposition coalition, possibly moving away from the PDP, even though he hasn’t officially confirmed his defection.
This new coalition recently made key leadership appointments. Former Senate President David Mark was named Interim National Chairman, and ex-Governor Rauf Aregbesola was picked as Interim National Secretary, among other top officials. Atiku’s involvement with the coalition suggests he’s preparing for another major political move ahead of the 2027 election.
If elected, Atiku says one of his top goals will be to clean up corruption in Nigeria’s public offices.
