Nnamdi Kanu’s release not condition for South-East to support Tinubu in 2027 – Umahi

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said that the South-East region is not demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu in exchange for supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

While speaking to reporters in Lagos on Friday night, Umahi dismissed claims that the region had made Kanu’s release a condition for backing the President.

He explained that the South-East is open to having discussions about Kanu’s release, but it shouldn’t be treated as a demand. Umahi noted that Tinubu was not responsible for Kanu’s arrest.

Umahi said that President Tinubu is a leader who listens, and he believes Kanu’s release can happen through peace, dialogue, and God’s grace—not through political pressure.

He admitted Tinubu may not be perfect but believes the President is making the right efforts. According to him, the international community trusts Tinubu’s reforms, which is why Nigeria is getting support for major projects.

Umahi praised Tinubu’s administration for carrying out major infrastructure work in the South-East, especially fixing roads that were neglected by previous governments.

He said that those who criticize Tinubu should show what they have done for the country instead of just making noise.

Umahi rejected claims that the South-East is being excluded from important federal positions. He said Tinubu has done more for the region than many past leaders.

He encouraged political leaders in the South-East, regardless of their party, to work together. Umahi said even opposition governors in the region are cooperating with the President.

He also said he has no plans to run for president in 2027. Instead, he plans to support President Tinubu.

Umahi said the APC remains the right party to help the South-East achieve its goals. He added that the region now has a strong presence at the national level and shouldn’t go backward.
