Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were buried in Portugal on the morning of Saturday, July 5.
The funeral service took place at the Mother Church of Gondomar (Igreja Matriz de Gondomar) at 10am. Many Liverpool team members attended the emotional farewell, including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley. Other players like Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, as well as Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot, also came to pay their respects. The club’s sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of football Michael Edwards were also there.
Several of Jota’s teammates from the Portuguese national team attended too. These included stars like Bernardo Silva from Manchester City, Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United, Joao Cancelo from Al Hilal, and Ruben Neves, among others.
Diogo Jota, 28, and Andre, 25, sadly lost their lives after their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire near Zamora, in northwest Spain. The tragic accident happened just after midnight on Thursday, July 3.
Reports say the two brothers were travelling through northern Spain to catch a boat to England. Jota was expected to rejoin Liverpool after his summer holiday.
The heartbreaking news came just two weeks after Jota married his longtime girlfriend, Rute Cardoso. They had been enjoying a short break following a busy football season where Jota helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. The couple had three children together, with the youngest born only last year.
