It’s sad that in today’s Nigeria, leaders are more focused on collecting titles than fixing the real problems people face. While the President is busy receiving honors in St. Lucia, people back home are dying and suffering.
Many children can’t attend school because their teachers haven’t been paid for years. This is just like the problem with unpaid lecturers that was raised earlier. This shows Nigeria is not working as it should.
When I said the President’s 8-day trip to St. Lucia was wrong, it wasn’t to insult St. Lucia. The problem is the bad timing. Right now, Nigeria is going through so much pain, and the President should be here with us.
The President’s team defended the trip by talking about cultural and economic ties and said he’s also going to the BRICS summit. But when people are dying every day, and schools and hospitals aren’t working, our leaders should be focused on solving these problems.
After four days in St. Lucia, we haven’t heard of any agreement or plan signed that would help Nigeria. Instead, all we’ve seen is the President receiving a personal award. This shows that our leaders care more about getting praises than bringing real progress.
Today, while the President got a title abroad, at least 37 people were killed in Yobe State during a Boko Haram attack. In Kwara, people are protesting because of high insecurity and joblessness.
Since the President left for this trip, many Nigerians have died in attacks. Schools remain shut, teachers are protesting in Abuja because they haven’t been paid, and children are still out of school. Families are running from danger, and people are living in fear. In just a few days, over 200 Nigerians have died. Even Russia, a country at war, hasn’t lost this many civilians in the same period.
Except for attending a wedding in Katsina and staying in his home in Lagos, the President has never spent the night in any other Nigerian state. He hasn’t even visited troubled places like Niger, Taraba, or Plateau States. But now he’s spending eight days in a Caribbean country.
Our country is in serious pain, but our leaders act like nothing is wrong. With bloodshed, broken homes, unpaid teachers, children out of school, and hospitals not working, we need leaders who will stay present and show care.
Some say the BRICS summit is the reason for the trip. But that summit is on the 6th and 7th. None of the top BRICS countries are taking long trips just for the summit. China said they’re too busy, and Russia’s President won’t attend due to the war. Even India’s Prime Minister will be doing a short 5-nation trip within those same 8 days.
