British singer, Jane Eugene arrested by US immigration officials and faces deportation for ‘overstaying her visa by 26 years’

British music star Jane Eugene has been arrested by US immigration officers for reportedly staying in the country 26 years longer than allowed on her visa.

Jane Eugene, the lead singer of the 1980s R&B band Loose Ends, was stopped by immigration officers at the Niagara Falls border, according to US Homeland Security.

The 62-year-old, also known as Jane Peters, was trying to cross into Canada but was denied entry. After that, US Customs officers arrested her at the border two months ago.

Jane has lived in the US for many years and performs across the country with an American version of Loose Ends. She currently lives in Los Angeles.

Officials say she once applied for a green card in 1999, but by then she had already overstayed her visa. Her application was rejected.

Because she stayed so long without permission, she may now face serious immigration consequences, including being removed from the country and not being allowed back for 10 years.

Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security said the law applies to everyone, even famous people.

She explained that Jane was denied a work-related immigrant petition in 1999 and was already staying in the US illegally. She was arrested on May 3, 2025, at Niagara Falls after being refused entry to Canada. She is now waiting for a court hearing about her immigration status.

Staying in the US illegally for more than a year is called “unlawful presence” and usually leads to a 10-year ban if the person leaves the country.

Loose Ends became famous in 1985 with their hit song Hangin’ on a String (Contemplating), which made history as the first British group to top the US R&B chart. The song also did well in the UK, reaching number 13.

The group started in London in 1980 with Jane Eugene, Carl McIntosh, and Steve Nichol. They were first known as Loose End, but changed their name to Loose Ends in 1983 when they signed with Virgin Records.
