PDP begins expanded caucus meeting amid heavy police presence

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has started a big meeting with its leaders at its National Secretariat in Abuja. This happened just after the police were seen surrounding the building.

According to Daily Post, the meeting came shortly after a private gathering of PDP governors at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, also in Abuja.

Some of the important people at the meeting included Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who leads the PDP Governors’ Forum, spoke to reporters and said the police came to stop any troublemakers from taking over the meeting.

The PDP had also decided to move another important meeting—the Board of Trustees (BoT) gathering—from Wadata Plaza to the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja’s city center. The party said it made this change for safety reasons.

Some PDP officials were not happy with the heavy police presence. They said it felt like the party was being harassed by security forces.

A former PDP national secretary, Umar Tsauri, told journalists that the police claimed they were acting on an “order from above.”

But the police in Abuja denied this. In a statement, Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said the officers were only there to keep things peaceful. She added that the PDP building was never locked or sealed by the police.
