Coalition: He won’t keep his promises – Omokri warns North against backing Peter Obi

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has advised Northern Nigerians not to trust Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, ahead of the 2027 elections. Omokri warned that Obi may not honour any promises made to the North if he becomes the opposition coalition’s candidate and eventually wins the presidency.

He was responding to Obi’s recent comment where he promised to serve only one term and hand over power to the North. Obi also clarified that there was no agreement for a joint ticket with Atiku Abubakar.

Omokri compared the situation to what happened in Cameroon in 1982 when Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned as president and handed power to Paul Biya. He said Biya failed to fulfil promises to the Hausa and Fulani people, who have since become the most marginalised in the country. Omokri suggested that a similar betrayal could happen to Northern Nigeria if they trust Obi.

He raised concerns over the killing of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri in 2021 and mentioned that Peter Obi has never condemned the IPOB group or their Monday sit-at-home orders in the Southeast, which continue to affect innocent Nigerians.

He also pointed out that during Obi’s 2023 campaign, he chose an Igbo man, Ifeanyi Ezeagu, as coordinator in Sokoto, a highly Islamic state, and another Igbo man, John Ezeigbe, as coordinator in Lagos.

Omokri questioned how Obi, who he claims broke a promise to the late Biafran leader Ojukwu, can now be trusted to keep a promise to the North. He warned that those who believe in Obi’s one-term promise should prepare for disappointment, like the betrayal the Hausa-Fulani faced in Cameroon.

Omokri ended by assuring the North that they already have a loyal friend in the South—President Bola Tinubu—who stood by Northern leaders and eventually became president with their support.
