President Bola Tinubu has helped settle the political tension in Rivers State by bringing together the major parties involved in the conflict. The peace meeting happened late Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Before meeting with the President, Governor Siminalayi Fubara had earlier met with Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This peaceful outcome was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He shared this update on his X account on Friday morning.
Onanuga praised Tinubu for showing true commitment to peace in the state. He said Tinubu had once again acted as a peacemaker, just like he did back in December 2023 when he first brought the parties together to sign a peace agreement. He noted that Tinubu repeated the effort last night, just three months after he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18.
The peace meeting had in attendance FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Speaker of the House Martins Amaewhule. They were all present at the Presidential Villa to talk things through.
A source told DAILY POST that the purpose of the meeting with the President was to officially inform him that all issues had been resolved and that everyone was now on the same page.
The source also noted that from their attitude and body language after the meeting, it was clear that the political leaders had settled their differences.
It’s worth noting that the crisis between Wike and Fubara was mainly about who had more control over Rivers State’s government and politics.
In response to the worsening situation, President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18. He said the crisis was putting lives and properties at risk.
As part of his emergency measures, Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers from the state House of Assembly. He also appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the state’s temporary administrator.
Now, with the latest peace meeting, things may finally be returning to normal in Rivers State.
