Godwin Emefiele faces fresh arraignment over illegal acquisition of 753 duplexes

Emefiele is expected to appear before Justice Hallilu at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court today, June 16, to answer questions about how he obtained the property. This case adds to the list of corruption allegations he has been dealing with in recent months.

The estate, which is located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09 in the Lokogoma area of Abuja, is very large—covering over 150,000 square meters. It includes 753 housing units and has already been taken over by the federal government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently brought new charges against Emefiele. They claim he got the property in a shady way and also used hidden accounts to control billions of naira. According to the EFCC, he didn’t act alone.

Court documents dated May 30, 2025, allege that Emefiele worked with someone named Eric Ocheme, who is currently missing. Together, they are accused of illegally securing the property.

Interestingly, the EFCC says this same estate had already been recovered earlier from another top government official, whose identity is still unknown. The FCT High Court in Apo had already ruled that the property be handed over to the federal government.

Emefiele tried to step into the case by asking the court to recognize him as someone with interest in the estate. His lawyer, A.M. Kotoye (SAN), filed the request, but the judge rejected it.

This new development adds more pressure on the former CBN boss, who has faced various allegations since leaving office.
