Benue killings: Only three LGs under attack, there’s frustration – Gov Alia

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State recently addressed the ongoing violence in the state, stating that only three local government areas are currently under attack. His administration has reportedly reduced the scale of these attacks significantly over time.

Initially, 17 local governments faced attacks, but Governor Alia noted that through concerted efforts, this number has been brought down to three. This progress demonstrates his government’s commitment to restoring peace and order in the region.

Speaking during an interview on Morning Brief, a program on Channels Television, Governor Alia shared details about the efforts made to combat the attackers. He expressed pride in the progress achieved despite the ongoing challenges.

Governor Alia stated, “We reduced the number of local governments under attack from 17 to nine, then six, and now three. This is a remarkable achievement for anyone who understands the reality on the ground in Benue State.” However, he acknowledged the frustration caused by the persistent insecurity, indicating that more work is needed to fully resolve the crisis.

In recent days, suspected herders have attacked Yelewata, a community in Guma Local Government Area. Last night, another assault occurred in Tse Yange, a predominantly Tiv community in Obi Local Government Area of neighboring Nasarawa State.

The attackers reportedly arrived on motorbikes and unleashed terror on Tse Yange, killing the village head and abducting several residents. The recurring attacks highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region.

While Governor Alia’s administration has made strides in improving security, the recent incidents serve as a stark reminder that more needs to be done to safeguard the lives and property of the people in Benue State.
