Kenya: President Ruto condemns death of man in police custody

Kenyan President William Ruto has spoken out about the recent death of a man while in police custody. The incident has led to national outrage as the country prepares to remember last year’s major demonstrations demanding change.

The man, aged 31, was taken into custody in western Kenya. He had made social media posts accusing a top police official, Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, of being involved in corruption.

After his arrest, he was moved to the central police station in Nairobi. Unfortunately, he died there over the weekend. At first, police said he had hurt himself by banging his head on the wall of the jail cell.

However, a government doctor disagreed with this explanation. The doctor said the injuries didn’t appear to be self-inflicted, which made the situation even more suspicious.

The case has caused anger among many Kenyans, especially online. It also led to protests in the streets. This is happening as the country approaches the one-year mark since protests over tax hikes and corruption, during which at least 60 people were killed by police.

“This tragic event involving the police is heartbreaking and should not have happened,” President Ruto said.

He urged the police to fully support a clear and honest investigation that would be completed quickly.

Interior Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also promised that the government would ensure anyone connected to this crime would be found and brought to justice.
