California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken legal action against President Donald Trump. He wants to stop Trump from controlling California’s National Guard and sending them to fight against protests against the government’s deportation plans.
There have been violent fights in Los Angeles after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, which caused many people to protest.
Newsom said Trump made the violence worse. He claimed Trump broke the law by putting California’s National Guard under federal control for two months through a weekend order. This order could let Trump use military forces, including the National Guard, to stop protests in any state.
“We are suing him,” Newsom said. He warned that Trump’s order hurts California’s independence and could be used in other states too. California’s Attorney General, Robert Bonta, said this was a wrong use of power and unfair to National Guard members, who usually help with emergencies and training.
The White House answered the lawsuit quickly. A spokesperson named Abigail Jackson blamed Newsom for the violence, saying he is responsible for the riots and attacks on police in Los Angeles. She told Newsom to fix the problem instead of suing without good reason.
Newsom did not hold back in criticizing Trump and his team. In a recent talk, he called the president “unhinged” and said the White House staff were a “band of misfits.” He warned that the troubles in Los Angeles might be just the beginning and the problem could spread beyond California.
Newsom even dared Trump’s border official, Tom Homan, to arrest him during a TV interview. He mocked threats against Democratic leaders who oppose ICE raids. Other Democratic governors, like Laura Kelly from Kansas and Andy Beshear from Kentucky, also supported Newsom. They said using the National Guard without asking states first is a serious misuse of power.
The protests in Los Angeles have kept going despite police efforts. More than 100 people were arrested during the ICE raids. Police called the downtown area an illegal protest zone after some demonstrators set cars on fire and blocked highways.
Trump defended his decision to take control of the National Guard. He said this helped stop Los Angeles from being “completely destroyed” by the protests. This fight between the federal government and California shows the strong political disagreement over immigration and how much power the president should have during state protests.
