It’s unfair for artistes to sign others just as milestone – Simi

Popular Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, better known as Simi, recently shared her thoughts on how some successful musicians sign new artists under their own labels. She believes this trend isn’t always fair to the upcoming talents.

In a recent chat with media personality VJ Adams, Simi said she’s open to mentoring younger artists. But she thinks it’s wrong for big stars to sign new artists just to show off their success or add to their brand.

Simi pointed out that managing a music label is a serious job and should be handled by people who know and care about the business side of music—not just fellow musicians treating it as a side project.

She explained that while some stars sign artists as a way to give back, many do it without long-term commitment. To them, it’s just something fun or trendy. But for the upcoming artist, it’s their whole dream and future.

Simi believes the right people to manage and sign new talents are those who have a strong passion for the music business. These people will stick with their artists through both the good times and the struggles.

She asked an important question: what happens if the new artist doesn’t blow up immediately? Will the person who signed them still believe in them and continue to support them?

Looking back at her own journey, Simi shared that she once asked herself if the label that signed her truly believed in her or if she was just part of their plan to look bigger.

She admitted that although she could sign an artist herself, she’s not sure she has the energy and dedication it takes. Supporting someone’s music career requires time, effort, and true passion—and she respects how serious that responsibility is.
