Mike Ejeagha, a respected Highlife music star, has passed away at the age of 95. He was famous for turning traditional Igbo stories and wise sayings into beautiful music that touched many lives.
The music legend died on the evening of Friday, June 6, 2025, around 8 p.m. He took his last breath at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after struggling with illness for a long time.
Back in the 1980s, Ejeagha was one of the most popular voices on Nigerian radio. His unique way of singing and storytelling through Igbo folk music made him a favorite for both older and younger generations.
Surprisingly, Ejeagha became an internet sensation in July 2024 when comedian and content creator Brain Jotter used one of his songs for a viral dance challenge. The dance had two people doing funny steps—walking in opposite directions, dancing toward each other, doing a silly leg move, and ending with a fun chase to the catchy chorus “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo.”
The song tells the tale of a smart tortoise who tricks a mighty elephant. It quickly grabbed the attention of today’s youth, helping many rediscover the beauty of Nigerian folklore and Igbo culture.
In September 2024, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah paid a visit to the music icon. To honor him, the governor renamed the street leading to Ejeagha’s house and promised to cover all his medical and personal expenses.
Mike Ejeagha may be gone, but his music and legacy will live on forever. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
