Nigerian music icon and cultural storyteller, Mike Ejeagha, passed away on Friday. His death marks the end of an era, but his influence on traditional music and storytelling will remain forever.

On Saturday, the Enugu State Government expressed sadness over his passing. They said the state had lost a great man who contributed so much to music and culture.

In a post on his verified X platform on Saturday, Mbah highlighted Ejeagha’s contributions to Nigerian culture and his ability to transform simple indigenous folktales into universally resonant songs.

“Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State.

“He was one of the finest musicians of his generation, with an easygoing personality and a humility that belied his towering celebrity status.

“His fan-base transcended boundaries, and he was easily one of the most recognisable voices in music”, Mbah said.

The governor further acknowledged Ejeagha’s unique artistic genius, saying “Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures.” 

Governor Peter Mbah shared his deep sorrow and said that the state would honour and remember Ejeagha in a lasting way.

Ejeagha was known for turning simple Igbo folktales into songs that people all over the country loved. His music helped promote cultural values and connect generations.

“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill. But the legacies he has left behind will last a lifetime,” Mbah emphasised in his post.

The governor said that losing Ejeagha is not only painful for his family but also for Enugu State, the Nigerian music world, and the entire nation.

He promised that the state government would take strong steps to ensure Ejeagha’s memory and work are remembered forever.

Governor Mbah also offered prayers for Ejeagha’s family. He asked God to give them comfort and strength during this difficult time. He ended by saying, “Rest in peace, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.”

Mike Ejeagha had a long music career where he used highlife music to teach people about Igbo culture, values, and wisdom.

Because of his unique way of telling stories through music, he touched the hearts of many and earned a special place in Nigeria’s cultural history.
