The local government in Epe, Lagos, has paused the plan to install a new Olu of Epe. This is because two men are both saying they should be the next king, causing tension and worries in the community.
Surah Animashaun, the head of Epe Local Government, said the decision was made to stop any fights and keep people and their homes safe. The disagreement between the two chiefs who want the throne has been getting more serious.
Because of this, the local government also cancelled the special Jumat prayer that was to be held at the central mosque during the Eid-el-Kabir festival. They are worried about safety during the celebrations.
The problem started after the last king, Oba Shefiu Adewale, passed away on May 31, 2025. Since then, two important chiefs, Adeniyi Odedeogboro and Iskilu Ikuforiji, have both said they are the new Olu of Epe.
In a letter to the community’s Grand Chief Imam, Surah Animashaun explained that the double installation of the new king on June 2 was not legal because of the king’s recent death. Both chiefs who say they are king have now been suspended until the authorities decide what to do next.
The letter also said that because of the unexpected situation and safety concerns, the Eid and Jumat celebrations at the mosque and Eid grounds in Epe are cancelled for now. More updates will be shared later.
Surah Animashaun asked the Muslim community to celebrate the Eid holiday quietly and follow the law. Everyone is also urged to stay calm and peaceful while the dispute over the new king is being resolved.
