Former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, has shared that he no longer visits the state he once led.
He made this known during an interview with Arise News, where he said that going back to Rivers gives him mental stress.
Amaechi explained that seeing the projects he worked hard on now abandoned or damaged is painful and upsetting.
He pointed out that many of the schools he built during his time as governor have been ignored and allowed to fall apart under the current leadership.
Amaechi said, “When I was governor, people saw the results. These days, some people build one flyover and make so much noise about it.”
“I built six flyovers and didn’t call the President to open them. I also built many primary schools. I challenge any other governor in Rivers State to match that.”
He added, “I built secondary schools so good that people called them small universities. Only two students stayed in each room. We even brought in Indian professionals to teach science while Nigerian teachers handled arts.”
Amaechi sadly noted that these schools are now destroyed and not being used. He said this is the main reason he avoids Rivers State—it deeply affects his mental well-being.
He also mentioned that his government tried to build a new city with 24-hour electricity, but that project too has been left to waste.
According to Daily Post, Amaechi is still an important member of the APC in the South-South but is now in opposition to the current government led by President Bola Tinubu.
He is also part of a political group working hard to challenge and possibly defeat President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
