Don’t choose successors because they kneel for you – Akpabio tells Govs

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has given important advice to governors who are serving their second term. He told them to be careful when choosing who will take over after they leave office.

Akpabio said some governors make the mistake of picking successors just because these people show a lot of respect or bow down to them. He warned that this can lead to betrayal later on.

He spoke about this on Saturday during the opening of the first 30 kilometers of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Lekki, Lagos.

The Senate President said that having a clear vision is very important for leaders. He told second-term governors, especially those in the All Progressives Congress (APC), to choose successors who have real vision, not just those who are loyal or always agree with them.

Akpabio said, “We have a President who can see far ahead and has a clear plan. I want to advise governors in their second term not to give power to someone who only wants power for the wrong reasons.

“Don’t choose someone who is not ready to lead. Don’t think that just because a person is always bowing or acting very humble, they are the right choice.

“If you do that, you might give power to someone who is not prepared to govern, and they will disappoint you. This is often where betrayals begin. I am just giving advice.

“For the governors in the progressive party, I believe you are doing well because you follow a leader who has both vision and good judgement,” he added.

At the event were President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Works Dave Umahi, and second-term governors including Hope Uzodimma from Imo, Dapo Abiodun from Ogun, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu from Lagos.
