The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the reasons behind the delay in the 2025 English Language examination held on Wednesday, May 28. According to the examination body, their intensified measures to prevent cheating were a major factor.
In a statement shared by Moyosola Adesina, WAEC’s spokesperson, on Thursday, May 29, the council admitted that students faced challenges due to the late start of Paper 2 of the English Language exam.
WAEC revealed that their efforts to stop question leaks inadvertently caused logistical delays, disrupting the examination process.
“Although we successfully protected the examination materials, these efforts unintentionally led to delays in conducting the exams as planned,” the statement noted.
The council also mentioned other reasons for the delay, including logistical issues, security threats, and cultural concerns. It assured the public that it is working with security agencies to prevent similar occurrences in future exams.
WAEC offered an apology to students, schools, and parents for the inconvenience and expressed gratitude for their patience during this difficult time.
The council reiterated its dedication to maintaining the credibility of its exams and fostering academic excellence in the region.
“We know how important it is to keep exams on schedule and understand how delays can affect students, their families, and schools,” Adesina added.
The English exam, initially set for May 28, was delayed for hours in many centres across Nigeria, forcing students to take the test late at night, using candles and phone flashlights to see their work.
