Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has shared that he may not run for president again after the 2027 general election.
His comments came from a video that recently started trending on social media platforms.
According to his media aide, Umar Ibrahim, the video is real and was recorded just recently.
In the 7-minute video, Obi spoke about how his age and the current state of politics in Nigeria might make it difficult for him to stay active in politics beyond 2027.
He explained that there should be a retirement age for politicians, adding that he would be 65 years old by the time of the 2027 elections.
Obi also said that if the presidency goes to the North in 2031, the South might have to wait until 2039 to get a turn again. By that time, he would be 77 years old—an age he believes is too old to run for office.
“If the presidency returns to the North in 2031, the South may not have another chance until 2039,” Obi said. “I’ll be 77 by then, and I don’t think that’s a good age to contest. It could spoil things.”
Even though he talked about stepping away from politics, Obi made it clear that he will still support young Nigerians who want to bring real change to the country.
“Even if I don’t run again, I’ll continue to support those of you who are serious about changing things. I’ll help in any way I can,” he said.
