Gov Adeleke vows action over Ilesa jailbreak

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State is very concerned about a recent jailbreak that happened at the Ilesa Correctional Centre early Tuesday morning.

Seven inmates who were still waiting for their trials escaped during the incident, according to reports.

The governor said the situation was unfortunate and promised that his government would do everything needed to find out what happened and return the escapees to custody.

On Thursday, Governor Adeleke visited the prison along with top officials from security agencies such as the Police, DSS, Immigration, NSCDC, and NDLEA.

Speaking through Kolapo Alimi, the State Commissioner for Information, Governor Adeleke said the state government would work closely with the Federal Government to investigate the cause of the jailbreak.

He also noted that the Federal Government is offering a ₦5 million reward to anyone who can provide useful information to help catch the escaped inmates.

“I am here on behalf of the people of Osun State to understand what went wrong that led to the escape of seven inmates at Ilesa Prison,” the governor said.

He assured the public that security would be improved at the prison. This includes installing better lighting and fixing the perimeter fence to prevent further escapes.

Governor Adeleke said the government would quickly install a solar-powered lighting system and upgrade the weak fencing around the correctional centre.

He also said both state and federal governments would work together to fix the problems at the prison and stop similar incidents from happening in the future.

During the visit, the Controller of the Ilesa Correctional Centre, C.C. Oluwadele, thanked the government team for their support.

He explained that the inmates used a heavy rainstorm on Tuesday to escape by taking advantage of the weakened security during the downpour.

Oluwadele added that the authorities are working hard to find the escapees and have already shared their biometric details with the public for easier identification.

“We are doing everything possible to find all the escapees and restore full order at the prison,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the escapees, 39-year-old Kabiru Oyedun, has already been caught by the Nigerian Police in Lagos State.

The police reported that he was arrested on May 21 around 5:35 p.m. in the Oshin-Welder area of Ayobo, after members of the public who saw him alerted the police.
