Defection to APC won’t stop trial of corrupt politicians – Nigerian Govt

The Nigerian government has made it clear that changing to the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will not stop corruption investigations against governors and other politicians.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, spoke on this issue. He said that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will continue to follow the law and fight corruption, no matter who is involved.

This statement came after an aide to Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made a claim. The aide, Paul Ibe, said that officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Ministry of Justice met with a former and current governor from a South-South state just before they joined the APC.

Prince Fagbemi said this claim was not true. He called it disrespectful and said it was made up. Although the aide didn’t name the governors, people who know the situation can guess who he meant.

The Attorney-General said that the EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General never met any governors as claimed. He asked the public to ignore this accusation because it was an attempt to harm President Tinubu’s efforts to fight corruption.

Finally, the government promised to keep fighting corruption and respecting the law, no matter whose interests are affected.
