The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected the recent comments made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. The party described his remarks as bitter, misleading, and not important to the political direction of Nigeria.
The PDP clearly stated that it does not need Babachir Lawal’s approval or support to shape its future or play its role in the country’s politics. The party made it known that it is fully capable of handling its own affairs without relying on his opinions.
This response was made in Abuja through the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum. His message was delivered by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Yusuf Dingyadi.
Earlier, Babachir Lawal appeared on Arise Television’s programme, The Morning Show, where he criticized the PDP. He described the party as having a deep and unfixable problem and said no opposition coalition should consider working with the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP responded by saying that while Lawal is free to express his views, the party is not seeking his support and doesn’t rely on him to shape its direction.
The party also described itself as Nigeria’s most experienced and widely accepted political platform. According to the PDP, it has the strength and structure needed to overcome challenges and offer better leadership than what the current administration provides.
The party went further to question Babachir Lawal’s track record, stating that his time in public service is remembered more for controversies than meaningful achievements.
It added that rather than being helpful to any political movement, Lawal’s past shows he might be more of a weakness than a strength for any serious political group.
The PDP emphasized that its focus is on rebuilding and preparing for the 2027 general elections. The party said it is open to forming partnerships, but only with those who share the same values and a strong commitment to democratic principles.
Finally, the PDP described Lawal’s recent comments as a desperate attempt to stay relevant in public discussions. The party encouraged Nigerians to ignore him and promised to continue working hard to restore hope, rebuild the country, and provide strong leadership for all.
