Zamfara group demands governor’s resignation over insecurity

A civic group in Northwest Nigeria has demanded the resignation of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, accusing him of failing to fulfill his campaign promises. The group, known as the Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability in the North-West (COGGAN), expressed frustration over the government’s poor handling of insecurity and the education sector.

In a statement signed by its president, Alhaji Ibrahim Anka, and released on Tuesday, COGGAN stated that Governor Lawal has not met public expectations since taking office in 2023. One of the key promises he made during his campaign was to end banditry within his first three months in office, but over a year later, insecurity remains a major challenge across many parts of the state.

The group noted that residents continue to face attacks on their communities, which has disrupted farming, damaged local markets, and affected children’s access to education. Many people in rural areas are unable to live safely or carry out their daily activities due to the ongoing violence.

COGGAN also criticized the government’s slow progress in the education sector, pointing out that many children still lack access to quality basic education. They believe the state government needs to do more to improve school facilities and learning conditions.

In addition, the group raised concerns about transparency in the management of public funds. They urged the state government to clearly explain how federal allocations and special intervention funds are being used, emphasizing the need for openness and accountability.

Concluding their statement, the group renewed their call for Governor Lawal to resign. They said Zamfara people deserve a leader who puts their safety, education, and overall welfare first.
