Federal High Court adjourns human rights suit against Anambra govt

A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, has postponed a human rights case brought by Lake Petroleum Limited against the Anambra State government.

The case is now set to continue on June 26, 2025. Mr. Emeka Orji, who is the Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, is also involved in the case.

Lake Petroleum took the matter to court, accusing the government of wrongfully demolishing its shops and houses last year.

During the latest court session on Wednesday, the judge was expected to give a ruling on an application from the Ogboo Family of Onitsha. This family is also claiming ownership of the land in question.

However, the judge explained that she could not rule on the application because she had not received the case file. She also said that she had been officially transferred to a new position.

Because of her transfer, the judge said she could no longer continue with the case and that it would now be handled by another judge. The next hearing was moved to June 26, 2025.

This court case has faced many delays since it started in March 2024. Justice N.O. Dimgba was the first judge on the case, but he was transferred. Then, Justice Yiwa Joseph handled it for a short time before also being moved. Now, with another judge stepping away, the case has been delayed again.
