A protest broke out in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, after the reported killing of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old final-year student from the Federal University, Wukari.
Witnesses say she was shot last Friday morning by unknown police officers at the Wurukum roundabout while she was in a car coming from the Gyado Villa area.
Her death has sparked outrage across the city. Many young people have taken to the streets to protest, led by gender rights activist, Ukan Kurugh.
The protesters gathered at the Wurukum roundabout in large numbers. They carried signs with messages like “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella.”
They are demanding that the government and police investigate the killing and take quick and fair action.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about police actions and the safety of citizens in Nigeria.
