Gas explosion claims 1 life, injures 6 in Onitsha

A sad incident happened in Onitsha, Anambra State, where a gas explosion claimed the life of one person and left six others injured.

The Police in Anambra confirmed this tragic event. The spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, shared the news in a statement on Saturday.

According to Ikenga, the explosion occurred on Friday at a plumbing market located along Uga Street.

Early reports showed that the blast was caused by a welding gas cylinder. It exploded while a welder was working on metal, likely because of overheating.

Police officers from the Onitsha Head Bridge station joined efforts with kind individuals to rescue six people injured in the explosion.

Sadly, one person died in the incident, and the six victims are now receiving treatment at a hospital. The body of the deceased has been taken to a morgue.

Police have also secured the scene to stop any criminals from taking advantage of the situation.

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep concern about the explosion. He stressed that gas cylinders need regular checks and maintenance.

He also reminded everyone that gas cylinders must be stored properly and used safely, following all manufacturer instructions, to prevent such accidents from happening again.
