Blackout: Sokoto, Kebbi get only 6 MW electricity supply — TCN

Residents of Sokoto and Kebbi States are currently experiencing major power supply issues. The two states are receiving only between 6 and 7 megawatts of electricity, which is far below what they normally get. The limited power is coming from the Mando Transmission Substation, and it’s being delivered through a long power line that passes through several towns.

This update was shared by Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in a statement released on Saturday.

The power disruption started after three transmission towers collapsed on May 7, 2025. The towers, which are part of the 330kV Kainji to Birnin Kebbi line, fell due to strong winds.

In response, TCN has begun the process of rebuilding the fallen towers. The company has brought in three different contractors, each responsible for fixing one tower. This plan is meant to speed up the repair work and bring back normal power supply as soon as possible.

While repairs are ongoing, the small electricity supply from the Mando Substation is acting as a temporary backup. This is to help reduce the impact of the blackout on people in the affected areas.

TCN also mentioned that it is trying to support Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo), which supplies power to many areas in the North-West. At the moment, Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi are still only getting between 6 and 7 MW of electricity.
