On the evening of Thursday, May 15, armed men launched an attack on a security checkpoint in Isuofia, Anambra State. The officers on duty were part of the Anambra Joint Security Team and bravely fought off the attackers.
According to reports, the gunmen suddenly came across the security officers and opened fire. During the gunfight, two of the attackers were killed. Sadly, one of the security officers lost his life. The criminals also set one of the police vehicles on fire.
Police spokesperson DSP Ikenga Tochukwu told reporters that the attackers ran away after facing strong firepower from the security team. They abandoned one of their vehicles, a Toyota Sienna, as they escaped the scene.
Ikenga also shared that the State Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the violent act. He said it was a challenge to the people of Anambra to stand united with the police in fighting criminal activities. The Commissioner promised that those behind the attack would be captured and brought to justice.
As of now, more armed officers are searching the surrounding bush areas to find and arrest any of the attackers who may be hiding nearby.
