The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) is asking for a change in the rules after Taiwo Awoniyi, a player for Nottingham Forest, got badly hurt.
Earlier this week, Awoniyi was put into a special coma after having emergency surgery on his stomach. He was hurt when he ran into a goalpost during the match against Leicester City, which ended 2-2.
The injury happened because the assistant referee took too long to raise the flag for an offside against another player, Anthony Elanga. This delay made the play continue, which led to Awoniyi’s accident.
The PFA has talked with Awoniyi’s family and is very worried about what happened. They want the rules to change so that if a player is clearly offside, the referee should stop the game right away. This would help avoid serious injuries like this in the future.
Now, the PFA will speak with the people who run football referees (PGMOL) and the rule makers (IFAB). Both groups are open to hearing ideas and making changes.
The goal is to find a good balance to protect players and learn from what happened to Awoniyi. This could make football safer for everyone.
