A 19-year-old girl, Faith Opesusi Timileyin, has tragically lost her life after taking rat poison. Her father, Mr. Opesusi Oluwafemi, revealed that she ended her life because of a low UTME score.
Faith had dreams of studying Microbiology at the university. But when she saw her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result, she was deeply upset and took a painful decision.
Her father explained in a recent interview with BBC Pidgin that she scored only 146. He said she had done very well in the previous year’s exam, but this time, the score crushed her spirit.
“She couldn’t take it,” he said. “Last year, her score was much higher. But when she saw 146 this year, she broke down completely.”
Mr. Opesusi also mentioned that his daughter didn’t talk to anyone about how she felt. “If she had told us, we could have encouraged her. We would’ve reminded her that it wasn’t the end and that there’s still hope,” he added sadly.
Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, admitted that there were problems with the 2025 UTME results.
While speaking to the media, the professor broke down in tears and offered a public apology. He explained that some errors occurred during the exam process.
According to him, nearly 380,000 students were affected by these issues, and the board is working to address the situation.
This heartbreaking story highlights the pressure students face during exams. It also reminds us how important it is to support young people during difficult moments.
