American singer Chris Brown was arrested in Manchester early Thursday morning. Police say he is accused of attacking a music producer at a nightclub in London back in 2023.
The 36-year-old singer had just arrived in the city on a private jet. He was staying at The Lowry Hotel in Salford when officers from the Metropolitan Police arrested him. Brown is supposed to start a world tour in just three weeks, but now his plans are uncertain.
Police confirmed they arrested him on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, which means causing someone serious injury.
A police statement shared with The Independent said a man, aged 36, was arrested around 2 a.m. on May 15 at a Manchester hotel. The arrest is connected to an incident in Hanover Square, London, that happened on February 19, 2023. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Command.
The alleged victim is music producer Abraham Diaw. He claims that Brown attacked him at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. Diaw told The Sun on Sunday that Brown hit him on the head two or three times, and that the attack caused his knee to collapse.
Diaw is also suing Brown in a civil court. He is asking for $16 million (around £12 million) in damages for his injuries and losses.
Meanwhile, Chris Brown is scheduled to begin his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour soon. One of the shows is supposed to take place next month at Co-op Live in Manchester.
Brown is well-known for his hits like “Run It!” and “Gimme That.” However, he also has a history of legal trouble. In 2009, he was in the news for assaulting his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.
He later pleaded guilty to felony assault in that case. As part of the punishment, he was given five years of probation, had to do community service, and attend counseling for domestic violence.
