Abia govt reopens closed Abattoirs, warns against burning of meat with tire

The Abia State government has reopened two abattoirs that were earlier closed due to poor hygiene. These abattoirs are located in Lokpanta and Uzuakoli. After fixing the problems and cleaning the places, they are now ready for use again.

During a press briefing, Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, shared the news. He spoke to journalists after the weekly executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.

The government also announced a new waste management program. The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has started collecting trash from door to door in Umuahia and Aba. In some parts of Abia North, they have begun picking up garbage street by street.

Ogbonnaya Okereke, the General Manager of ASEPA, warned people about the dangers of eating meat processed with burning tyres. He said this practice is not safe and makes the meat taste bad. The government is now planning to turn cow dung into biogas to stop this harmful method.

The government also congratulated Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia. The team has qualified to play in the CAF continental competition next season. The government called this a historic moment for the state.

Lastly, the state announced that Sunny Onwuma, the Commissioner for Labour and Employment who died a few weeks ago, will be buried on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
