Gunmen Attack Commercial Vehicle In Imo, Kill Passengers And Set Several Vehicles Ablaze

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, gunmen attacked a commercial bus traveling along the Okigwe-Owerri road in Imo State. The sudden ambush led to the death of several passengers.

After the attack, the gunmen set fire to at least eight vehicles, including a truck. The truck driver ran away just in time before his vehicle was burned.

The Imo State Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the attack. He said police are working closely with other security agencies to find the criminals behind it.

According to Okoye, the attackers are believed to be members of the banned IPOB/ESN group. They launched the attack early in the morning, shooting into the air and creating fear among travelers.

The criminals, divided into three groups, blocked the road between Umunna in Onuimo Local Government Area and parts of Okigwe around 5 a.m. They burned trucks, buses, and motorcycles. Sadly, some people died during the chaos.

The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, went to the scene with a team of police officers, soldiers, DSS, and other agencies. They helped survivors and started searching for the suspects right away.

A large search is now happening in nearby forests and areas where the attackers may be hiding. Okoye said the operation will continue until all those responsible are caught and punished.
