Popular Nigerian music star, Davido, has spoken out about the state of leadership in Nigeria. In a recent interview with Ebro Darden on Apple Music, Davido boldly stated that “Nigeria has the worst governments.”
He explained that even though the country has struggled with poor leadership for many years, one thing that’s been giving Nigeria a good name globally is its entertainment industry — especially music.
“I am happy that entertainment switched the narrative,” he said. “We [Nigerians] don’t have the best leaders. We have the worst governments. But the music and entertainment industry has positively impacted our country’s image abroad.”
Davido also pointed out that the Nigerian entertainment industry is now attracting people from all over the world. He shared how last December, he saw more Americans in Lagos than Nigerians. “I was like, what are you all doing here?” he joked.
The singer noted that things have changed. In the past, Nigerians used to be excited about traveling to the U.S. or Europe. But now, foreigners are the ones coming to Nigeria to enjoy the vibe, the culture, and the music.
“It’s not just the music,” Davido added. “It’s the culture as a whole. If you go to Paris Fashion Week, about 80% of the models are Africans — same with the creative directors. It’s impressive.”
Davido’s comments highlight the power of African creativity and how Nigerian youth are reshaping the world’s view of their country, despite the challenges they face at home.
