“In Nigeria, politicians pay youths N20,000 to insult those advocating for their future on social media” – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has shared his concerns about how politicians operate in the country.

He said many politicians in Nigeria practice what he calls “transactional politics.” This means they often spend money to get what they want, including hiring young people to do their dirty work online. According to Obi, some of these politicians pay youths around N20,000 just to insult and attack people on social media — especially those who are speaking up for a better future for Nigeria.

Obi criticized this act, saying it’s wrong to use money to silence voices that are fighting for positive change in the country. He believes the energy of the youth should be used to build a better Nigeria, not tear it down for short-term benefits.

Obi said;

‘’People pay them to cause confusion. As I am here now, go to social media. All those that are being paid N20, 000 or N40, 000 monthly are youths whom you are fighting for their lives because at over 60, I have just few years to go but we can get it right.”
