Court remands singer Terry Apala for alleged Naira mutilation in Lagos

Popular Nigerian singer, Terry Apala, has been sent to a Correctional Centre by a Lagos court for allegedly damaging Naira notes during a party.

The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, made the decision on Friday, April 25, 2025. Terry Apala, whose real name is Terry Alexander Ejeh, was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly stepping on Naira notes while dancing at a party held on January 5, 2025, at La Madison Place in Oniru, Lagos.

According to the charge, this act goes against the Central Bank of Nigeria Act of 2007, which says damaging Naira notes is a crime.

Terry Apala pleaded not guilty when the charge was read in court. The EFCC lawyer, S.I. Suleiman, asked for a trial date and requested that the singer be kept in custody.

Terry’s lawyer, Felix Nwabuda, said they had already filed for bail and asked the court to let the singer go temporarily until the bail hearing. He mentioned that Terry came back from the UK on April 23 to respond to the EFCC’s invitation and has no plans to run away.

However, the EFCC lawyer objected, saying the bail request was unusual and needed more time to respond properly.

Justice Akintayo Aluko ruled against the bail request for now and ordered that Terry Apala be kept in custody.
