Former Minister of Transportation and one-time Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, recently shared a touching story from his past. During an interview with Daily Sun, he spoke about how hard life was for him growing up. His family struggled so much that they couldn’t eat three meals a day or afford new clothes.
Amaechi said he wore the same shirt and trousers for nearly four years, and many people today find that hard to believe. Back in school, some of his female classmates refused to date him because he was poor.
Now, many years later, when he meets those same women at school reunions, he reminds them how they rejected him because of his background. He even jokes that they missed the chance to be “Mrs Amaechi.”
His story is a powerful reminder that people should never be judged by their situation, because no one knows what the future holds.
“We’re going for a reunion in Umuahia, and I usually yab my classmates when we meet at reunions. I would say ‘You see, one of you could’ve been Mrs Amaechi now, maybe if you had agreed by the time we were in school.’”
Further talking, he said, “But, because we were very poor, we did not have the money to feed, we did not have cloths to wear, you people did not give us attention. You people did not think we’ve bright future. But one thing you do not know about men is that, they fight to be relevant. So, for me, I’m as simple as life can give.”
