A symbol of hope, peace, and compassion in an increasingly divided world – Christian Association of Nigeria mourns Pope Francis

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern States and Abuja, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis. They joined the global Christian family in mourning his death.

In a message shared by CAN chairman Rev. John Hayab, the Pope’s death was called a great loss not only for Catholics but for all Christians, especially those in Northern Nigeria. Rev. Hayab said Pope Francis was more than just a Church leader — he was a powerful symbol of hope, peace, and kindness in a world that often feels divided.

Rev. Hayab said the Pope always encouraged unity, prayer, and reflection during difficult times. From the beginning of his time as Pope, he focused on making the Church more welcoming and full of mercy. He cared deeply for the poor, stood up for the environment, and spoke out against unfairness and injustice. He also worked to build peaceful relationships between different religions.

CAN also praised the role of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigerian communities and how Pope Francis influenced local churches, missions, and schools. His message of service, understanding, and strong faith inspired many beyond just the Catholic Church.

Rev. Hayab said that even though this is a sad moment, it is also a time to honor Pope Francis’s life and work. His efforts to bring people of different faiths together and promote Christian unity will always be remembered.
