At least 33 people have died and more than 80 were injured after a US airstrike hit Yemen on Friday. The strike targeted Houthi rebels and is one of the deadliest attacks since the US military campaign in the region began under President Donald Trump on March 15.
According to the US Central Command, the goal of the attack was to cut off illegal funds that support the Houthi rebels, who have been active in the region for over a decade. The strike hit the Ras Isa oil port.
US officials said the strike was not meant to harm the people of Yemen. They stated that Yemeni citizens deserve peace and freedom from Houthi control.
However, the Houthis’ al-Masirah news channel showed disturbing footage of dead bodies at the site. They claimed that paramedics and other workers were among those killed. The explosion also caused huge fires at the port.
Just days before the strike, the US State Department had warned about oil shipments going into Yemen.
A report by the Associated Press said the recent strikes under Trump are even more aggressive than those under former President Biden. The US is now not only hitting missile launch sites but also targeting people and cities connected to the Houthis.
This new wave of airstrikes started after the Houthis threatened to attack Israeli ships again, protesting Israel’s blockade of aid going into Gaza.
