LaLiga will send five teams to the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. This makes Spain the second league, after the Premier League, to earn an extra place in Europe’s top competition.
This extra spot comes from the European Performance Spot (EPS), which rewards leagues based on how well their clubs do in the three major European tournaments – the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. UEFA introduced this system as part of a new 36-team Champions League format.
England confirmed its extra spot on April 8. Spain followed after a strong week in Europe — Athletic Club knocked Rangers out of the Europa League, and Lazio were also eliminated. These results gave LaLiga enough points to finish in the top two of UEFA’s performance rankings.
Now, both LaLiga and the Premier League will have five teams in the Champions League next season.
In the Premier League, the fight for the top five is very close. Newcastle United (59 points), Nottingham Forest (57), and Manchester City (55) are currently in those spots, while Chelsea and Aston Villa are just behind with 54 points.
In Spain, the top four are already secure, but Villarreal (51 points, with one game left to play) and Real Betis (48) are battling for fifth. Celta Vigo and Mallorca are five points behind them.
Fans can look forward to more Spanish clubs in next season’s Champions League, adding even more excitement to the competition.
