Drake has updated his lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), claiming that Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance was planned to ruin his image.
Both artists are signed to UMG but under different labels. In 2024, they were involved in a heated rap battle, releasing diss tracks aimed at each other. Kendrick’s diss track “Not Like Us” became very popular and topped the charts.
Drake first took legal action in January, saying UMG helped spread false and harmful information about him by promoting Kendrick’s song. The track included serious accusations, calling Drake a “certified pedophile” and a “predator.”
UMG responded by trying to dismiss the case, saying Drake was only trying to cover up the fact that he lost the rap battle.
In a new legal filing made in New York, Drake’s legal team said Kendrick’s Grammy wins and Super Bowl performance brought even more attention to the song, making the damage worse. They said these major events helped the song reach new audiences, which increased its streams and caused more threats against Drake and his family.
Kendrick won five Grammys in February, and just a week later, he performed during the Super Bowl halftime show, which was watched by over 133 million people. During the performance, he chose to leave out the word “pedophile” from the lyrics.
Drake’s legal team believes the performance still helped spread the damaging message of the song.
