A violent clash between rival cult groups outside Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has resulted in one person dead and four others injured. The incident took place on Tuesday, with eyewitnesses reporting that members of the Eiye and Aye cults exchanged gunfire during the fight.
A graphic video shared on Facebook showed a man in a white shirt hitting another man on the head with a hammer while others watched. The fight occurred close to the Polytechnic gate, and the injured were quickly rushed to a private hospital, but one victim died on the way to another facility.
According to a witness, the victim, a male adult, was alive when leaving the first hospital but passed away before reaching Osogbo. A source also revealed that security personnel at the Polytechnic had tried to prevent violence by meeting with suspected cult members but could not stop the clash.
Dr. Tope Abiola, the Dean of Student Affairs, confirmed the disturbance but clarified that the victim was no longer a student of the Polytechnic. The Osun State Police have acknowledged the incident and reported that the injured are receiving medical care, though they have not confirmed any deaths.
The clash caused panic in the area, with students and locals fleeing the scene as gunshots were fired. There have been no arrests, and the identities of those involved in the conflict are still unknown.
