The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called on the “Take It Back Movement” to cancel its planned nationwide protest on April 7, 2025, describing the timing as “ill-conceived.” The police argue that the protest, set to take place across several states, will clash with the Federal Government’s celebration of National Police Day, a day dedicated to honoring the hard work and dedication of police officers.
In a statement from ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the police expressed concerns that the protest on the same day as the National Police Day would harm the reputation of the police force.
The National Police Day event is a significant occasion, attended by dignitaries including foreign police chiefs and diplomats, and it highlights the police’s role in maintaining national security.
While the police acknowledged the right to peaceful protests, they questioned the motivation behind holding a demonstration on the same day as an official event for the police. The NPF described the protest as “mischievous” and suggested that it could hurt the public image of the police and the country.
The police also encouraged the organizers of the protest to explore other ways to address their concerns, such as engaging in dialogue with government officials. They stressed the importance of peaceful discussion and urged everyone involved to consider the broader impact of their actions.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights, urging peaceful engagement rather than actions that could cause disruption.
