Autopsy reveals cause of death of Nigerian boxer who slumped during a fight in Ghana

An autopsy has revealed that Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, a 40-year-old Nigerian boxer, died from cardiac arrest during a boxing match in Ghana.

Olanrewaju, who was once the National and West African light-heavyweight champion, was fighting against Accra’s John Mbanugu, also known as “Power,” at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025.

During the match, Olanrewaju suddenly collapsed in the middle of the fight. The referee quickly stopped the match and called for medical help. Despite the efforts of medical professionals to revive him, Olanrewaju was later pronounced dead.

Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and the President of the West African Boxing Union, confirmed that the preliminary results of the autopsy showed cardiac arrest as the cause of death. However, further investigations are ongoing before the body can be released.

The autopsy was carried out on April 2, following a court order to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the Nigerian boxer.
