The Abia State House of Assembly has seen another shift in political allegiance, as Collins Ugochukwu, a lawmaker from the Isiala Ngwa North constituency, defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).
Ugochukwu’s move was confirmed in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, and was read aloud during a plenary session on Wednesday.
This change follows a similar defection just a week ago by Lucky Nweke Johnson, who represented the Isuikwuato constituency.
Johnson cited internal crises within the PDP and praised Governor Alex Otti’s leadership as his reasons for joining LP. In February, Rowland Dennis, another lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa South, also switched from PDP to LP.
Ugochukwu’s decision to join the Labour Party could have significant political implications, especially as Isiala Ngwa North is a key area in the upcoming 2027 governorship elections in Abia State. The loss of support in this populous region may impact the PDP’s chances in future polls.
