South Korea’s Constitutional Court to rule on President Yoon’s impeachment

South Korea’s Constitutional Court will announce its decision on Friday, April 4, on whether President Yoon Suk Yeol will be permanently removed from office. Yoon was impeached by lawmakers after he briefly declared martial law late last year.

The court confirmed in a statement on April 1 that the ruling will be delivered at 11 AM (02:00 GMT) and will be broadcast live. At least six out of the eight justices must support the impeachment for Yoon to be officially removed from his position.

If the court upholds the impeachment, South Korea will hold a new presidential election within 60 days. However, if the ruling goes in Yoon’s favor, he will immediately return to office. Yoon has been suspended from duty since mid-December.

Yoon defended his short-lived martial law decision by saying it was meant to highlight the opposition Democratic Party’s obstruction and alleged support for North Korea.

The National Assembly quickly overturned his decree, leading him to lift martial law within six hours. Yoon was elected president in 2022 and has faced political challenges during his term.

All eyes are now on the Constitutional Court as South Korea waits for its decision on the country’s leadership.
