U.S. Vice President JD Vance has defended President Donald Trump’s administration after it mistakenly deported a Maryland father, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to a dangerous prison in El Salvador.
Reports revealed that the Trump administration admitted in a court filing that it had wrongly deported Garcia, who had legal protection to stay in the U.S. However, the administration argued that U.S. courts do not have the power to order his return from the prison where he is currently held.
Former Obama aide Jon Favreau criticized the administration’s handling of the situation. In a post on X, he tagged JD Vance and Elon Musk, accusing them of ignoring the wrongful deportation.
Favreau wrote, “You just admitted to accidentally sending an innocent father from Maryland to a torture dungeon in El Salvador. And you refuse to do anything about it.”
JD Vance responded to the criticism by saying that Garcia was a convicted MS-13 gang member who had no legal right to stay in the U.S. He further stated, “It’s gross to get fired up about gang members getting deported while ignoring the citizens they victimize.”
The debate has sparked conversations about the Trump administration’s immigration policies and how deportation decisions are handled.
