Residents of Olena in Asa community, located in Otukpo LGA of Benue State, have abandoned their homes after a wave of violent attacks by suspected herdsmen. The attacks, which have lasted for four days, have led to the deaths of several people, while many others have been kidnapped.
A resident, who managed to escape, shared his experience. He confirmed that the villagers were left with no choice but to flee on Monday night when it became clear that no help was coming.
“I am now in Upu. I left with my family tonight. The entire community has been deserted because Olena has been under attack for days. Several people have been killed or kidnapped. We have been calling for help, but no security agents have come to assist us. I was lucky to escape with my life and my family,” he said.
Reports indicate that the attackers have been moving freely, terrorizing the community without any challenge from security forces. Video clips obtained by reporters show residents running for their lives as the attacks continued on Monday night.
The situation remains tense as residents seek safety elsewhere, hoping for a response from authorities to restore peace in the area.
